After nearly 13 years on road patrol for the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, Mike Chilcot is ready for a new challenge. And he’ll be getting the opportunity following his promotion Tuesday morning to the rank of lieutenant. Chilcot starts his new duties as watch commander on Wednesday. “I’m real proud of you. You worked hard to earn this,” Sheriff Ben Johnson told Chilcot as he promoted him in front of his family and about 50 co-workers who gathered at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach.
A Virginia native, the 38-year-old Chilcot started with the Sheriff’s Office in October 1993. Before that, Chilcot spent about five years as a corrections officer at Tomoka Correctional Institute. At the Sheriff’s Office, he was promoted to sergeant in January 2001 and spent most of his 13 years with the agency in patrol, except for a stint in training. Chilcot also serves on the department’s SWAT Team. “You’re doing a great job, and it’s a great pleasure to present you with your badge,” said Sheriff Johnson. Chilcot, who lives in DeLand, has a Bachelor’s Degree in Organizational Management from Warner Southern College. Chilcot and his wife have two daughters.
Also promoted Tuesday to the rank of sergeant was Kevin Pedri. Pedri, 36, started as a reserve deputy with the Sheriff’s Office in March 1995. He was promoted to a full-fledged deputy in October 1996. His most recent assignment was in the Deltona traffic unit. He also is on the SWAT Team and has served as a field training officer.
