15-YEAR-OLD BICYCLIST STRUCK AND KILLED BY CAR IN DEBARY

A 15-year-old boy riding his bicycle in DeBary late Friday night was struck and killed by a passing car.

The crash occurred at about 11:34 p.m. along West Highbanks Road near its intersection with Gracie Road. A 17-year-old driver, Nicholas Petersen of DeLand, was behind the wheel of a 1997 Nissan passenger car traveling east on West Highbanks Road. The collision critically injured Brian Wentworth, who was riding his bike along the street where he lives. Officials initially called for a Sheriff’s Office helicopter to airlift the boy to the hospital. However, his injuries were so severe that they decided to transport the boy by EVAC ambulance to nearby Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City. The victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The two occupants in the car were uninjured. The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the cause of the crash.
