Flirting with a female co-worker got a 25-year-old man stabbed Tuesday night by the woman’s angry boyfriend. Fortunately for the victim, Eliz Campos, the attack only inflicted a fairly small laceration to the abdomen. Volusia County Sheriff’s deputies who responded to the call in New Smyrna Beach arrested 27-year-old Petronillo Quiahua-Perez on charges of aggravated battery and misdemeanor battery.

Deputies unraveled the story after responding to Bert Fish Medical Center in New Smyrna Beach, where the medical staff reported that a man was in the emergency room being treated for a stab wound. Through a translator, the victim told deputies that he had been working at Mi Mexico Restaurant in New Smyrna Beach and flirting with a female co-worker. When Quiahua-Perez, the woman’s live-in boyfriend, came to the restaurant Tuesday night to pick her up from work, he became angry and started a verbal altercation with Campos after he saw him flirting with his girlfriend. Campos walked out of the restaurant, but the defendant followed the victim to his truck to confront him again. That’s when he’s accused of shoving the victim in the back and then pulling out a pocketknife and stabbing him. Quiahua-Perez fled the scene, while two of the victim’s co-workers drove him to the hospital. After sorting out the events, deputies went to the defendant’s home in New Smyrna Beach and took him into custody at about 11:40 p.m. When Quiahua-Perez was arrested, he still had the bloody knife in his pocket. The defendant was booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail in Daytona Beach.
