FIFTH SUSPECT ARRESTED IN STRING OF VIOLENT ROBBERIES

Volusia County Sheriff’s investigators nabbed the fifth and final suspect Thursday afternoon in a violent crime spree last weekend that included an armed home invasion in DeLeon Springs. Investigators tracked down 20-year-old Kenya Alexander at a DeLand restaurant, where he was arrested at about 12:40 p.m. Alexander, of 840 Valleydale Ave. in DeLand, is facing charges of armed robbery and armed home invasion in two separate attacks on Saturday. The oldest of the bunch, Alexander is part of a group that’s under investigation for at least two more robberies. Sheriff’s investigators arrested the other four defendants, ages 17 and 18, on Saturday and Sunday.

The first report came at 4:36 a.m. on Saturday -- an armed home invasion at an apartment at 4748 N. U.S. Highway 17. The five suspects barged into the apartment, pointed guns at the occupants, ripped the telephone out of the wall and demanded money from the victims. The intruders fled the residence with purses, wallets, cash, jewelry and a Nintendo game system. While no one was injured, witnesses said that at least one shot was fired as the suspects bolted from the apartment. Twenty minutes after the first incident, the Sheriff’s Office received a report from a couple who said that they were driving along Broderick Avenue in DeLeon Springs when a blue passenger car blocked their path and several occupants carrying guns came up to their vehicle and robbed them. One of the victims in the car was struck in the jaw with a gun. Alexander, who’s being held on $20,000 bond, is charged in both robberies.

Officials believe members of the same group also were involved in a robbery Saturday afternoon at Chuck Lennon Park in DeLeon Springs as well as another robbery on Saturday morning at the Applewood Apartments being investigated by the DeLand Police Department. At about 5 p.m. on Saturday, a 16-year-old boy reported to deputies that he had gone to Chuck Lennon Park with some friends when he encountered the suspects in the parking lot. One put him in a choke hold, another punched him in the face and another pulled a knife and put it to his throat. The victim lost a tooth and also sustained cuts on his lip and under his eye in the attack. The suspects fled the scene after taking cash from the victim’s pocket.

The other four defendants are 18-year-old Kendall Adams of DeLand, 17-year-old Londarel Harris, Jr., of Deltona, 18-year-old Justin Maurelis of DeLeon Springs and 17-year-old Christopher Wilson of DeLand.
