He’s known as one of the most skilled police motorcycle riders in the country, having won numerous law enforcement competitions. He’s also known as a well-rounded supervisor who consistently demonstrates effective decision-making, sound judgment, professionalism and an enthusiasm for the job. And now, Eric Westfall is also known as the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office’s newest captain.

Sheriff Ben Johnson promoted Westfall earlier this week in a well-attended ceremony at the Deputy Stephen Saboda Training Center in Daytona Beach. The 41-year-old Westfall has been with the Sheriff’s Office for 21 years, having started his career in September 1993. During those two decades of service, Westfall has set the bar high in every assignment and has never failed to exceed expectations. “It’s a great honor and a pleasure to be able to present you with your Captain’s badge,” Sheriff Johnson told Westfall. “You’ve worked hard for it.”

Westfall has served in a variety of assignments, including patrol, motors, court security, civil and communications. He also served a stint as watch commander, with his last assignment prior to his promotion being an assistant district commander of the Sheriff’s Office’s Deltona headquarters. In his new role, Westfall will serve as the agency’s court services supervisor. Westfall has an Associate of Science degree in criminal justice, an Associate of Arts degree and a Bachelor’s of Applied Science degree in Supervision & Management -- all from Daytona State College. He also is a graduate of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s Leadership Academy.

Also promoted this week to the rank of sergeant was David King. An eight-year veteran with the Sheriff’s Office, King started with the agency in May 2006. The 28-year-old King will serve as a patrol supervisor.
