DELAND POLICE TO CONDUCE PEDESTRIAN SAFETY OPERATION NEAR STETSON UNIVERSITY

The City of DeLand Police Department is partnering with Stetson University Public Safety and the Florida Department of Transportation to assist with pedestrian safety education, awareness and enforcement.

On three separate dates DeLand Police officers will be patrolling the main thoroughfares around Stetson University’s campus. Special attention will be given to locations where there is a high amount of pedestrian and vehicle traffic together. During this time period there will be an increased police presence in the prescribed area. The dates and times are as follows:

  • August 15, 2017 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
  • September 12, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
  • September 26, 2017 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The initial launch of this operation will have the primary purpose to educate violators. This will be through the issuance of warnings, along with providing information and answering questions relevant to Florida State Law. Future operations will become more enforcement-based with officers having full discretion to issue Uniform Traffic Citations for violations observed.

The operation falls in line with part of the police department’s mission statement to “safeguard the lives and property of the people we serve, to reduce the incidence of fear and crime, and to enhance public safety.”

We urge everyone to think safety first when operating a motor vehicle or crossing roadways. Here are a few simple tips:

  • Wear your seat belt and pay attention to traffic control devices.
  • Leave in plenty of time to reach your destination without being in a hurry.
  • Put your cell phone down – drive/walk first and talk or text later.
  • Cross roadways at appropriate crosswalks, adhering to any displayed signals.
  • Don’t use drugs or alcohol when driving.
