COCO’S NIGHT CLUB SHOOTER ID’D ON YOUTUBE, ARRESTED
The gunman in a nightclub shooting that sent a stray bullet into a bystander’s leg is in custody today after detectives tracked him down thanks in part to his distinct clothing and his appearance in a YouTube video from the party.
Shantonio Kemp, 25 (DOB 2/20/1992), is in the Volusia County Branch Jail on $50,000 bond, facing a charge of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He was transported there yesterday from the Putnam County Jail after authorities located him in Palatka.
The shooting happened July 22 during a large party at Coco’s Night Club near Ormond Beach. Around 2 a.m., deputies in the area heard several gunshots and rushed to the parking lot, where they were flagged down by a witness who told them her friend was shot. The victim, a 24-year-old woman, had a gunshot wound to the left thigh. Her injuries were not life-threatening.
Although cooperating witnesses were difficult to find, deputies were able to determine that the suspect was wearing clothing with flamingos on it. A day later, after a video of the party was posted on YouTube (titled “Project X / Veezy Birthday Bash”), Detective Jason Turner learned the suspect made an appearance in the video, wearing a flamingo-print shirt.
Detective Turner distributed photos of the suspect to other law enforcement agencies in an attempt to identify him. Soon after that, Kemp was identified and an arrest warrant was issued, leading to his arrest in Putnam County.
